I am an 8th grade Civics & Economics and our next lesson is on laws in Virginia. Our textbook doesn't tell us what the laws are and I cannot find anything on the Internet. Anyone who can help me out, Thank you!!!|||According to the Code of Virginia, Section 18.2-58, the penalty for Robbery is confinement for a term of life or any term not less than five years in a State Penal Institution. As far as consequences, they can be even more far-reaching, ranging from self-guilt to whatever civil penalties as may be requested by the victim and awarded by a civil court. While in Criminal Court, the defendant must be proven to be guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, Civil Courts require only a preponderance of the evidence. In other words, the burden of proof is much less in Civil Courts, where the court make monetary awards. Below is the wording of the code as written.
If any person commit robbery by partial strangulation, or suffocation, or by striking or beating, or by other violence to the person, or by assault or otherwise putting a person in fear of serious bodily harm, or by the threat or presenting of firearms, or other deadly weapon or instrumentality whatsoever, he shall be guilty of a felony and shall be punished by confinement in a state correctional facility for life or any term not less than five years.
