I know it was a while ago, but I live near the epicenter of the Virginia earthquake and I just wanted to know if there was a chance that it was a foreshock, and if so, how big of a chance?|||According to Wikipedia, 40% of moderate to large earthquakes have foreshocks. A moderate earthquake is one with a magnitude of at least 5.0. There are around 940 moderate or higher earthquakes per year. There are around 3.4 million smaller earthquakes per year. Foreshocks can happen more than a year before the main quake, but the odds of it being a foreshock for a large quake within a year are approximately 1 in 9,000. The odds of it being a foreshock for a major (>7.0) quake are around 1 in 250,000.|||Thanks :)
