In 2004, Bush won 55% of the vote in Virginia.
In 2008, Obama won 52.6% of the vote in Virginia, higher than Florida were he won 50.9% and in North Carolina where he won by 49.7%.
I would have thought Florida would have been the most liberal state in the South, but its Virginia!|||Va is still very much conservative. We were like most of America, fed up with the current conditions, the lies, and political bickering. We wanted unity, peace, and openness. Thats why we went with the Republicans the past 2 years|||This is not at all unusual actually. Look into the election results over the last 10 presidents, the whole country has gone from solid brand x party to solid brand y party and back again over and over. Divide and conquer works.|||So somehow votes within the 50th percentile range can constitute a "stronghold"?
Goodness me, such a radical turnaround, to go from the low 50s to the high 40s.|||Virginia has a Republican governor, so Virgina is not exactly the Southern version of Vermont.
When was the last time Vermont had a Republican governor.|||It snapped back in 2009 (Governor) and 2010 (Congress)--big time. Democrats got crushed.|||Currently they are conservative.|||Isn't that one of the states to go blue in '08 for the first time in 40 years?|||Maybe the backwoods hicks are starting to get outnumbered by the smart urban liberals.
