For Virginia residents - Can you please tell me the makes and models of scooters that are street legal - meaning you can ride them in traffic. I am not talking about the small scooters you can ride on sidewalks or on the side of the road. Also, for street legal scooters, do I have to have a motorcycle license or is a driver's license okay? Thanks for your help in advance.|||In Virginia, anything under 50cc you don't need a motorcycle endorsement. But remember, they will only max out at around 30-40 MPH. Get your motorcycle licence, its not that big a deal. Then get something with at least a 125cc engine. You will appreciate the extra power.
Stay away from the Pep Boys scooters, they are infamous crap. Pep Boys is happy to sell them to you, but they won't service it.
Don't buy anything on the internet. You really need to go to a dealer, sit on them and find the right scooter which fits you to a tee!. Your best bet is to stick to the brand names.
Honda, Yamaha, Vespa, Piaggio, Genuine, Aprilia,Kymco, E-Ton, TGB... If you are in Northern VA, you can check out Coleman Powersports in Falls Church and Woodbridge, Vespa Washington (in DC).. Near Richmond?, Vespa Richmond and Scoot Richmond (SCOMO).|||Virginia DMV

Check your regional Pep Boys in-store specials . . the SC50 scooter is sometimes offered with a $100 rebate making the final price around $730 + tax. Pep Boys does not service them however, so you will need to do oil changes and other routine maintenance yourself (unless you're female and can exploit a male unit into doing it for you).

Also check your regional craigslist > for sale > motorcycles for used scooter values.

If the 49cc 4-stroke 30 mph top speed (slower on hills) is not suitable for your needs, a 150cc scooter has around a 55 mph top speed, but also requires a motorcycle endorsement on your driver license (in addition to insurance and registration).
