Looking for somewhere in the vicinity of Northern Virginia. Somewhere where I can just park my car, get out, set up a blanket and lay down. Preferably within one hour driving distance.|||Scroll down on the first link to December 4th. You get a good stargazing night with NOVAC...the Northern Virginia Astronomy Club...at one of the public observing nights, like a star party.
Free, but some places there's an overnight parking charge of $4 or so.
There will be members with telescopes all set up and some good folks to meet for a guided tour round the sky.
If you turn up in a car after dark turn off the headlamps as you approach the field where it's all set up.
It's normal manners at star parties so it doesn't mess up people's eyes when they've got their night vision sorted already.
Take some food and a flask of coffee or a camping stove for hot fresh coffee. Use stoves well away from the telescopes.
Loads of folks will be doing the same so no worries.
Gotta eat. It gets cold at night. Plenty of warm clothing, some hot food and coffee makes the night more comfortable.

Do a Google search for info on any of them close to you if no direct link is provided.

By yourself....just drive away from the city lights. Anywhere dark is as good as anywhere else for watching the sky if the weather is good too. A low horizon all round helps. Next few nights the Moon is bright so it's not great for star watching but the Leonid meteors are around for a day or two yet.
Some good places on here for Virginia and some observing tips....

Have a good time.|||There are several places to stargaze. Before I answer, can I ask, why do you want to stargaze ?
Are you in love or trying to escape from love?
If your answer to any of these questions is yes, then bring her/him with you to stargaze. I am sure he would be more than happy to be with you. Stargazing is the best when you will have your lover with you.

I have been into court for custody / child support in the state of Virginia for the passed two years now. Nothing is getting done here to help me. My ex husband knows this judge and his son very well. I have told the passed three attorneys that I have had about this and nothing.
So I want to make this known! But how do I do so?|||The judge is supposed to recuse himself (disqualify himself) from a case if he is friends with one of the parties.
Produce definite evidence of the relationship between the judge and your ex, then your attorney will have to bring this to the judge's attention and ask him to withdraw. They can't do it just on your say-so. It needs be more than membership of the same big social or sporting club, it needs to be evidence they meet socially on purpose in a friendly way (eg dinner at each other's places, fishing together etc)|||make a motion to recuse. depending on your state laws about recusal. many states require a monetary interest, for the judge to have been an attonrey for one party, or another reason the judge would be impartial for personal interest reason.

|||Since everything about real estate is location-dependent, the best way for you to answer that question yourself is to look at a site like http://www.realtor.com for current land for sale, or zillow or tulia.

Look for lots the same size (since you don't get the same $/acre for 100 acres as you do for 1/2 acre), and in the same neighorbood to whatever degree is possible (since land varies quite a bit in price from one area to another even in the same city.). I know that Virginia had the largest number of slaves, but why? I can't find the answer anywhere.|||Slavery was legal and accepted. Virgina was the larges colony and it was comosed of large farms or plantations which made a wealthy colony.|||As a matter of fact, Virginia had the largest number of slaves because she was ver wealthy and could afford them.
Margaret, in contrast had but a few slaves, due to the repeated failures of the guppy harvests from 1716 to 1804. She should have invested her money in the grapefruit soup mono[poly instead. Then she would have had the means to have many more slavfes than Virginia.

  • Yes I have a question about my legal right about a polygraph test like how accurate it is and also can it be used in Virginia court systems? I have been accused of something really embarassing and the police want me to take a polygraph but when I get around police period I go into a nervious state. My main is if I fail can the police throw charges on me and can it be used in court?|||You can always refuse a polygraph test. It is unreliable and not admissible except in rare circumstances. You will have to ask a VA lawyer if it could be used in your situation. The police may regard your refusal as some indication you are guilty, but if you have already been charged with something, they don't need it and you definitely should not take it. If someone is saying you did something illegal, and that allegation is being investigated, a polygraph could help you if you are not guilty, but only if it is administered by a well-trained, highly experienced polygraph expert. There are not a lot of those around, and they are not cheap

A lot of people are nervous when subjected to a polygraph, guilty or not. A good administrator takes his/her time to get you comfortable with the test, even bored. Most local police types administering the test do not do a good job of that.|||The polygraph can not be used in a court of law. My best advice is get an attorney and get one fast. You do not have to take a polygraph that is your choice not the Detectives investigating the case. Nothing good can come from taking one. It is not like if you pass the Detectives are gonna drop the case. If you fail it is only going to want to make them dig deeper into your story. I say do not speak with them under any circumstances. Go get advice from an attoryney. In the yellow pages you can look for an attorney and mostof them will give you an hour free so take them up on it.|||Polygraph results aren't admissible in court anywhere, because they aren't completely accurate.

But, they are accurate enough for investigative purposes. The police want you to take a polygraph so they'll know if they are on the right track. If the polygraph shows that you didn't do it, then they'll focus their energies elsewhere.

And, everyone's nervous when they take a polygraph. The examiners are able to take that into account.|||Polygraph test are inadmissable in a court of law for the exact reason you mentioned. That means a ploygraph test can NOT be used in a court of law anywhere in the United States. In most jurisdictions, if you work on an armored truck, around large sums of money or for the Federal Government you may be required to take a polygraph for continued employment however, generally these cannot be used in a court of law.|||You are not required to take a polygraph, and if you did volunteer to take one, it could not be used against you in court. As mentioned previously, there is enough inaccuracy to not trust the results.

As for being nervous about taking it, this is not much of an issue. They do some initial questions to get a baseline that is used for the rest of the questions, so that (supposedly) nervousness will not show as an untruth.|||Some States (NJ is one) allow for "stipulated" polygraph results to be admitted in court. If both the State and defendant agree in advance that the results would be admissible in court, they can be admitted. If there is no agreement, the results would not be admissible.|||You don't have to take the test if you don't want to.|||Polygraph tests are not admissible in court and therefore not required.
They can help you if you want to help clear your name in a legal setting but they can be a legal pitfall as well.

So in Game 4...you get a win..then it's 2-2...or you get a loss so it's 3-1 to the Rangers. So with a win, you go to Texas needing 1 win or 2 wins. At this time that's the best you can do.|||He was tired last tune out, and didn't do his job.

I'm working in Virginia for the summer. There are two other summer workers here that are residents of Virginia, but I am currently a resident of Maryland. We all work full time (40 hours/ week), however it seems that every paycheck the other two summer interns receive about $40 more than I do. I'm told that Maryland's income tax IS greater than Virginia's, but does that sound like a correct margin of difference?|||I don't know as there are also other factors involved that determine how much state income tax is taken out of your paycheck. But each state sets that rate according to what their state legislation determines it needs to be set at.

Just like federal income tax is dependent on what you claim on your W-4, state taxes usually work the same way. A single person with no children will have more taken in state tax than a married person with 2 children (assuming their gross income is the same).

So if you take all factors into consideration (tax rate in the the two states, gross salary, withholdings claimed on W-4, etc.), a $40 difference is very possible.

I would like to start a real estate company in Virginia with two other people. Only one of us will be a licesed realtor. Is that OK? Are there any resources out there than can help me plan this company? Thanks!|||This came from your States Association Web Site:

    Licensure and ownership
    of real estate firms
Who may own a real estate firm? The answer is simple:
anyone may own a real estate firm. There is no requirement
that owners of a real estate firm be licensed. However,
there are some things you need to know.
While a non-licensed person can own an interest in a
real estate firm, there are limits on the types of ownership
    available to certain licensees.
Corporations: Any person, whether licensed or not,
may be a shareholder or director of a corporation. Generally,
only brokers may be officers (president, vice-president,
etc.). Salespersons who are active in the business
may not be officers. (However, salespersons who are not
active in the business may be officers.)
Partnerships: Salespersons who are active in the business
may not be members of partnerships. All partners must be
either non-licensees or brokers. (A salesperson who is not
active in the business may, however, be a partner.)
Limited liability companies: Salespersons who are
active in the business may not be members (owners) of an
LLC. (However, salespersons who are not actively engaged
in the business may be members of an LLC.) Otherwise,
all members must be either non-licensees or brokers.
    ______________________________________鈥?br>
To set up an office, you need to totally understand how to run a Brokerage, costs, bookkeeping, etc. I'd suggest looking at some of the smaller franchises because they are generally inexpensive and most have assistance for opening offices.

Not necessarily. You can visit http://www.propertysupport.info for some useful info on starting real estate business. Good luck!|||Depends on what type of "Real Estate" you plan on doing. Will you manage apartment complexes, will you manage retail properties, or commercial, will you be selling homes?

If you are selling homes, one of you needs to be a broker, a Realtor only holds a real estate sales associates license someone needs to be a Broker who handles and oversees other sales people.

To be on the safeside one of you should have your brokers license, being that only one holds a license then as long as they have been licensed for two years then they can get a Brokers license.

Requirements to sit for the Brokers exam is that you must have held a sales associates license for no less than 2 years.

I'm wanting to get a gun for protection but I'm planning on going to college at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.|||No you don't need a license to own a gun. You DO need a license to carry a concealed handgun in those states that have concealed carry laws.|||if you want a gun. you need a license. No other way around it.
It doesnt matter if its for protection ,hunting or etc.|||yes you need a license in all 50 states. even Texas which is kind of a rebellion state with there laws.|||NO, YOU DO NOT NEED A LICENSE IN VIRGINIA!! You could get a concealed carry license- always a good idea. But there is no FEDERAL LICENSE OR REGISTRY for purchasing or owning firearms. And there isn't a license or registry for purchasing or owning firearms in Virginia. Sorry, the caps are based on my frustration with the two other answers.

  • I currently hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. I am considering obtaining my initial teaching license with PK-6 endorsements. Ultimately, my goal would be to become a school principal one day. What is the best path to reach this goal? Please tailor your answer to requirements in Virginia. Thanks in advance!|||Most of the teachers that I've worked with that have gone on to become administrators follow this path.

They teach in their subject area for at least 3 years, mostly while they're working on their administrative degree.
Once they have obtained that, they usually apply to be an assistant principal over the summer during summer school to get their bearings.
If that works out, they then go on to get a position as an assistant principal, usually at another school.
After many years of work and dedication as an assistant principal, they generally move up to API positions or APO positions, and then from there may transition up to becoming principal of a school.

This more often than not requires transfers between schools, and sometimes districts.

My wife was struck with a shovel (we have the shovel) by her ex-husband in Martinsville Virginia and the police never investigated the incident. (we have a forensic scientist's report) She was placed on IV's (we have the IV materials) in the home by her ex, who is a doctor, and was later rushed by helicopter for emergency surgery. For years we haven't been able to pursue this since our children were young and my wife had serious health issues to overcome. We have many, many files on this and would like to know if anyone has an idea about attempted murder statute of limitations in Virginia or if this could be developed further through a book?|||There is NO statute of limitations in any state in the US. What a very sad, sad story! I'm sorry for your pain.|||I'm not sure. But serious crimes, like this one, typically don't have statutes of limitations.

But were the polict not notified in the begining? If they were then they should have pursued the case.|||It's not your role to pursue criminal charges against another person. It's the role of the police. If you neglected to file charges at the time of the incident then it's up to the police to decide if they have legal grounds.

What you really want to do is sue for damages; however in Virginia, the statute of limitations on personal injury lawsuits is two years. Good luck.|||Wow, I am so sorry you all have been through this. While I don't have an "expert" answer, I would suggest that you call the Prosecuting attorney's office in the County where this took place and talk to him, asking him that question. Good luck and I hope, if he did this to your wife, he is put away for a very long time!|||There is no state of limitation on attempted murder or murder

Is anyone as outraged as I am at how the media is splashing the killers face across the TV any chance they get?!?! At how the media is doing EXACTLY what the killer wanted them to do, to display his tape?!?! At how the media will give every sicko out there an idea if you want to go out do it this way!?!? How it took less than two days for the media to turn every single frickin report on Virginia Tech into a mini-drama with cut scenes and theme music!!!

What the media is doing will lead to more and more school shootings. It's exactly what they are hoping it will do since it will create news.

The next tragedy to strike should be the resignation of all sitting news media CEO's for the harm they are causing not only to the United States but the world!|||I am just as disgusted...the first thing they did with the tapes was copy, edit, air....then call the authorities....in a report this morning they said they turned it over before it was opened....uh...hello, then why are we watching these clips? I am all for understanding why killers do what they do for preventative measures but this was done for ratings and money....no more...no less.|||It's the media's job to excite the public with outrageous tragedies.
The media played exactly to what Cho wanted. The should have just mentioned the package and video instead of posting it all over the place.|||Never, it's the media|||The media loves to milk every tragedy dry. They send their stupid reporters out to stand around the area asking stupid questions.|||When they stop increasing their ratings from the coverage.|||When we stop supporting their propaganda Bull****,and switch over to alternative news.|||Soon I hope. It's getting ridiculous.|||Because pain sells, especially other peoples. But also, in a huge part, because they want to convince us that we should allow cops and government more control over our personal safety. No one seems to have wondered where we would be if the victims had been armed.|||I agree w/ you 100%. Remember this, the MEDIA tells you what THEY want you to know. Plus Bush is thanking his lucky stars and is telling Cho's family, "Thanks for taking the pressure off of me & my oil deals in Iraq"! What the media is going for is coverage. They would rather report about some whack job going LOOLOO with a gun on ANY campus USA instead of some child under the age of 10 saving another person's life. Why? Becuase that's boring. It doesn't matter where in the world you are, "The media tells you what THEY want you to know!"|||You are right. They should try and cover this event up. And I am sure those news media CEOs are the ones responsible.|||When will it end? When there is something more horrific to lead the evening news.

What ever happened to Gary Condit? Oh that's right....9/11!|||What bothers me is the video of Cho that he sent to NBC. First off, we should be focusing on the victims. By putting this video out for the world to see, this killer, this monster is winning. The media is glorifying this murderer, instead of glorifying the victims, and the heroes.

Will this send a message out to other sick individuals, that if they go on a killing spree, they too will get their fifteen minutes of fame? I

t sickens me to think that this is what our world is coming to. Watch the news, every day we are blasted by tradgedy in the mainstream media. news anchors start off by saying good morning, good afternoon, or good evening. But is it really. Each day they say this, and each day death, and war, is on the news. When will we go back to being a peaceful, less hatred country. I am dreading the day when, when this country falls apart.|||reminds me of the cliffhangers on soaps and sitcoms right before May sweeps month... how much shock can we possbily get..... very sad|||Their job is to give us "the low down"..and they're "running" the heck out of this story.
I believe this killer should get no "air time" the way it's being done.|||AS SOON AS SOME ONE CALLS A BLACK PERSON ANOTHER RACIEST NAME...THAT'S WHEN!
I UNDERSTAND EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN,IT'S BEEN WORST CRIMES THEN THIS AND THE MEDIA IS JUST PUBLICITY HOUNDS!|||It's the media, they do this all the time to increase ratings and get more money from advertising. They'll stop milking this when people stop caring.|||The media is monitoring Yahoo! answers, and they will only stop when suckers like us stop talking about it. Oh, no! I'm part of the problem...|||I couldn't agree more.

What's worse are the people who whole heartedly will argue tooth and nail against your question because it seems unsympathetic. The fact is that the majority of Americans are gobbling up the big heaping plate of BS that the media is feeding them and are asking for more!

The media pampers to what people watch most. The only way the American public will watch something is if it looks cinematic. It must be sensationalized to the extreme. "It's the worst thing to happen in ages!" Folks don't want to hear about it unless it looks melodramatic.

No, it's not. What it IS, however, is the BEST thing to happen for the MEDIA in ages.

It makes me want to toss my television, radio, and computer right out of the window. Where is the genuine news? Did the war in Iraq stop? Afghanistan? Debates on abortion? Alberto Gonzales?

I am thinking of getting out of my lease for the apartment that I am renting. Are there any Virginia laws which would apply a penalty for doing so?|||The answer to that lies in your lease agreement. Virginia law is very strict and verbose in most areas; however, when it comes to lease disputes, there is very little statuary law. Essentially, what you can do is break the lease by talking to your landlord and trying to resolve it that way and document everything. Take pictures of problems with the apartment, and document when you discussed them with the landlord. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING!

Your landlord can try to collect the rent in small claims court. If he/she does, you can appeal the decision to District court which takes about 3-4 months, but the outcome is still directly related to what is written in your original lease agreement. You can argue that the living conditions are not reciprocal to the amount of rent you pay, but that is up to the court to decide. And don't forget...if your landlord is angry...he can list the break in the lease on your credit report as non-payment.

Honestly, the best thing you can do is to talk to your landlord about options. If you really want out..consider making a deal that you pay for the listing fees in the newspaper to get a new tenant in your stead. It would be cheaper than rent and your landlord may just take your offer.|||There are no Virginia laws as such. Any penalty for termination of your lease contract is contained within your lease. If the lease contract offers no 'exit arrangements', then you are responsible for the rents for the premises until the lease expires. The landlord's only duty is to try to re-rent the premises to mitigate your damages.

I want to go into the Sonography program, but the only 2 schools I've found in Austin are Austin Community College and Virginia College. I saw ACC's Eastview campus (the only campus that offers the Sonography program) and it's in a pretty ghetto neighborhood, which makes me uncomfortable. Is Virginia College the same way? Is it worth my time to go up there?|||You are better off at the Eastview campus area than the Virginia College area. Trust me, I work for the Austin PD, I can tell you much more crime happens around where Virginia College is than Eastview. The good thing about Austin is though, there are many bus routes that head to the ACC campuses. If you don't plan on driving, there are routes coming from everywhere. Good luck!

I want to know if Virginia is important to the Southern colonies?
What role does it take?|||Virginia is almost a swing state. Slavery did flourish there in the 1700s and her politicians were heavily involved in the creation of the nation and she had power when it came to laws favorable to slavery. Later as slavery grew more powerful in the cotton rich regions of the Deep South (Alabama, Mississippi) the center of the slavery movement shifted south away from Virginia.

At the time of the Civil War there was almost no doubt Virginia would go with the South. With the capital being in Richmond, Virginia is now considered a solid part of the Confederate South.

When West Virginia seceded from Virginia in 1863 and joined the Union, that was big blow to the Confederacy.|||Of course it's important to the colony.

I'd really like to hear from people that HAVE had this experience in Virginia. I was going 91 in a 65 zone. I live out of state but I see on the back of the ticket there's a possibility to be fined up to $2500. I need to know how much it usually is and if it stays as a misdemeanor forever or just for a few years on your record.|||Well, It depends on the judge you get and what county. I live in Va and you will probably get a ticket from 1,000.00 -1,800.00 and it will stay on your record for 7 years. Good Luck & Slow Down!!|||First and foremost, get an experienced reckless driving lawyer in Virginia. At 91 mph, most judges in Virginia will put you in jail. Second, this is a class 1 misdemeanor. The fine is not the issue usually. The jail time, the loss of your privilege to driving in Virginia and possibly being reported to your home state are the main issues. Also, your insurance rates may skyrocket.|||In VA you have to show in court. You can't prepay. If they give you suspension in VA your license will be suspended in your home state. Reckless driving generally stays on your record for 11 years. It can be less but that depends on if it was speeding.

The smart person gets a lawyer and minimizes the financial impact later.|||i live in va ive gotten a reckless ticket beforre my advice is to go to court i know you live out of state but it will save u money go to court and you will get proven guilty but ask the judge to go to driving school and they have to let you and it will get dismissed you will just have to pay like 60 for school and it wont go on your record but if dont go it depends if it was a state city or county state is more expensive then city then county and if it is a road tons of ppl have died on they will burn u but i would say 500 if city 800 state im guessing bc i did the school|||Well I live in Virginia and my husband got a reckless driving ticket and it was 250.00 all together, it wasn't no wear near 2500.00, still a lot though. There was just an earthquake in virginia. Will the aftershocks be worse than the actual earthquake?|||most likely they will not be worse, but there is a chance that there may be some|||You can check out the earthquakes in the world on a live up-to-the-minute map at GlobalIncident.

As earthquakes happen, you can see their location on the map. Below the map there are details about the earthquakes.

When earthquakes happen and you hear about them in the news then you can check the map.

For instance, 10 hours ago (1:31 AM EST) there was another earthquake in Virginia of magnitude 3.4. You can see this clearly on the map.|||The aftershocks are always smaller than the original quake. If they are bigger, it is considered a separate earthquake(if the epicenter is far enough away geologically) or even the main earthquake and then the original earthquake is considered a foreshock. Also, aftershocks are more likely if the earthquake was shallow, as this one was. I live about 40 miles north of the one today and, though I grew up in San Diego, this one was scary, especially since the ground is not supposed to move like that here in VA. LOL|||Omg it was so scary i live in virginia and i was like freaking out but the earthquake was a 5.8 and the after shocks at the most should be around 2.8 way less than what we felt tuesday but i think there over now but there was one last night i think it was the last it was a 4.5 which was still scary but less than tuesday|||There was a 4.5 aftershock early this morning. It woke me up but I'm several miles from the epicenter so it wasn't bad. Right now everyone is freaking out more over Hurricane Irene and we're going to be evacuating. So this is a great week for Virginia.|||By definition, aftershocks cannot be worse than the 5.8 earthquake. If they were, then the 5.8 quake will be referred to as a fore-shock. To answer your question a little more directly, nobody can predict whether a stronger quake will occur.|||There already were aftershocks in Virgina, they were around 2.8, and I didn't feel them here in PA. I felt the 5.8. They are not concentrated here so if a big one came, they could feel it in the middle of the US I'm sure. You only need to worry if there is one higher than a 5.8, which is unlikely.|||There will most likely not be an aftershock. I'm originally from CA but it still scared the crap out of me since it's been many many years since I've experienced one AND I live near DC so "EARTHQUAKE!!" wasn't my first thought and wasn't the scariest thought that ran through my head.|||From what I've gathered it could be worse but likely not to be worse. i'm 60 miles from the epicenter and my wife felt the 4.2 aftershock at work at about 805. More to come Im sure. Very strange!|||Probably not. The television reported that you may or may not get aftershocks and they should occur within the next two months. Instead of raising taxes the state of Virginia has decided instead to impose outrageous fines for traffic violations. For example, a $3,000 speeding ticket. Under this new plan the state is counting on raising billions. Is it just me or is this an outrageous abuse of power?|||THE STATE OF VIRGINIA HAS BEEN KNOWN FOR YEARS TO PROFILE DRIVERS FROM OTHER STATES AND THOSE REDNECKS WILL MAKE UP ANY REASON TO GIVE YOU A TICKET. I GOT A TICKET AT DULLES AIRPORT FOR GOING PAST AN AIRPORT COP AND HE ACTUALLY SAID I DISOBEYED A TRAFFIC SIGN WHICH WAS HIS CAR IDLING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE SECOND ONE WAS ON THE ACCESS ROAD FROM DULLES AIRPORT WHERE THERE WAS TOO MUCH TRAFFIC ON THE 495 BETHESDA EXIT, I DECIDED TO GET BACK ON 66 INSTEAD OF BEING STUCK IN THAT TRAFFIC. EVEN THOUGH I WAS STOPPED, THIS FOOL GAVE ME A TICKET FOR RECKLESS DRIVING. IF YOU NOTICE, THE MAJORITY OF THE TICKETS ARE FROM THE EVENING SHIFT COPS. ACCORDING TO A COUPLE GOOD ONES I SPOKE TO ON THE MORNING SHIFT TOLD ME THE EVENING SHIFT WAS AN EXTREMELY AGGRESSIVE GROUP OF COPS AND THERE HAVE BEEN LOTS OF COMPLAINS ABOUT THEM. ANOTHER THING IS THEY PROFILE PEOPLE THAT LOOK FOREIGN TO THEM IN HOPES TO CAPTURE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, AND WHEN THEY FIND OUT THAT THEIR SUSPICIONS ARE WRONG, THEY CREATE A REASON TO CITE YOU. UNFORTUNATELY, WHEN YOU GO TO THEIR TRAILOR COURTHOUSE, THERE IS ALSO A CORRUPT JUDGE WHO DOES NOT LISTEN TO ANYTHING YOU HAVE TO SAY OR EVEN IF YOU HAVE A WITNESS. MY CONCLUTION IS THEY'RE ALL ABOUT REVENUE AND COSTING PEOPLE THEIR LIVELYHOODS WITH FALSE CITATIONS THAT GO TOWARDS YOUR DRIVING RECORD. HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF RECKLESS DRIVING WHERE YOU PAY $150.00 WITHOUT POINTS? AFTER DRIVING IN MARYLAND FOR 12YEARS WITHOUT A SINGLE TICKET, TWO OF THOSE VIRGINIA REDNECKS GOT THE BEST OF ME IN 2003/4 REALLY MESSING MY RECORD. WHEN I REPORTED THEM, THEY STARTED STOPPING ANYBODY THAT DROVE FOR MY COMPANY LOOKING FOR ME FORTUNATELY I HAD CHANGED TO A PRIVATE ONE THAT THEY HAD NO IDEA ABOUT. SO THE MAJORITY OF TICKETS IN THAT STATE ARE ALL ABOUT REVENUE AND FOREIGNERS AND VISITORS FROM OTHER STATES ARE THEIR MAJOR TARGET. ANYONE READIND THIS, STAY AWAY FROM VIRGINIA. IT'S NOT ABOUT WHAT YOU DO. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT REDNECKS THAT HATE THEMSELVES AND WHAT THEY DO FOR A LIVING THAT THEY'RE WILLING TO BRING ANYBODY DOWN FOR NO APPARENT REASON.|||don't speed|||I think I would slow down......|||thats gay

good luck fellow virginians|||I agree wholeheartedly!! Everyone boycott it!!! Drive 20 miles an hour on the interstate!|||Can't pay the fine, don't do the crime. It is against the law to drive in excess of the posted speed limit. I am for it. It is a grand way of raising state revenues.|||too much , are they in deficit? it is outrageous and abuse|||US States can pass any laws they like to deal with people in violation of their rules.

In Indiana & Illinois there are fines, not quite as large, but getting there if someone is speeding through a construction zone. This is because a lot of construction workers have been killed by people ignoring the yellow diamond flashing warning signs.

People are free to appeal this to Supreme Court, provided they can pay some lawyer to take their case. Perhaps a class action suit is duable.

I am wondering how many people can even pay these fines, and what happens then ... will the state confiscate the vehicle that was speeding, sell it at public auction to get the money for the fine?|||I think that the state is feeling just a tad broke so they put a hefty fine on something almost everybody does....the government is always raising prices/taxes to raise money for themselves....sucks but is true....|||that is so cool. i believe that if you drink and drive you should go to jail.. it should be attempt murder.|||Speeders (and reckless drivers) cause accidents that cost taxpayers millions in lost productivity and require expensive safety equipment and structures. Maybe these fines reflect the true cost of speeding and the other violations they're paying for.|||Sounds like a good idea to me.

It's not an abuse of power. It is possible that they could go years and not collect a dime..... All that needs to be done is for the morons behind the wheel to obey the speed laws...

Not a problem for those who obey the laws....

Does anyone have any ideas where in the Northern Virginia (metropolitan DC) area I could donate them? I have already tried contacting the usual suspects - Goodwill, Salvation Army, about a half dozen thrift stores - and nobody is interested in taking them. It seems like a waste to just take them to the dump, but I don't have space to store them for much longer and I can't think of many options.|||try craigs list... usually easier to get rid of closer to the holiday tho. Surely the creation of West Virginia was handled in a way that had, and still does not have, any precedent. It seems to be a mystery how and when the state was created. At the beginning of the Civil War the western end of Virginia prefered to stay in the Union and the eastern end of Virginia preferred to join the Confederacy. Suddenly there was another state in the Union; West Virginia. There has to be a legal procedure of some kind that is valid for such a major step.|||I will not comment on the constitutionality of it--but....

The United States did not recognize the secession of Virginia.

Therefore, it did not recognize the the secessionist government of Virginia, which was in Richmond.

Instead, it recognize what remained of the Virginia legislature, the Unionist legislature, under Pierpont Morgan and meeting in Alexandra Virginia.

That recognized government, even though it was a rump legislature, authorized a convention in Wheeling, Virginia (not West Virginia) to determine if the western part of Virginia wanted to become its own state.

When the convention voted for separation of the new state from Virginia, but the Unionist government of Virginia and the United States accepted that dermination as constitutional and recognized the new jurisidictation. Then West Virginia, just as another other US territory, wrote a constitution and asked for admission to the United State, and the United States accepted it. Meanwhile, even then the USA government recognized the now tiny Unionist goverment as the legstimately government of Virginia, not the secessionist government in Richmond.

That's how it worked. As I say, I don't know the constitutional law well enough to judge.|||Neither Pennsylvania or Ohio wanted it lol. But there's a really cool haunted prison there. Moundsville, check it out.|||Texas was admitted to the Union after it's war for Independence from Mexico.
The District of Columbia was observed as separate from Virginia and Maryland.
Washington Territory was admitted as Washington, Oregon, and part of Idaho.
Wisconsin Territory was included as Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Dacotah Territory was divided and admitted as North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana
    Just a few examples/precedents
Although the location of a National Capital was highly contested: There was never a"Constitutional " challenge to any of the preceding.............ALL RATIFIED BY THE CONGRESS OF THE U.S. West Virginia(Kanawha 1861- 1863) voted to stay in the Union) It's only difference From the rest that it was the only "Northern State" south of the Mason-Dixon Line|||First the State of West Virginia exists because a group of lawyers met and figured out how to use the US Constitution to create a state from territories claimed by another state, Virginia.

When Virginia left the Union the 44 western counties had generally rejected the idea of separation and joining the Confederacy. So when Virginia seceded from the Union the representatives of these disgruntaled counties met in Wheeling and elected to leave Virginia.

Article IV, Section 3, of the US Constitution says that no new state can be created from the territory of another without the consent of the losing state's legislature, and the acceptance of the process by the US Congress.

When Virginia left the Union the representatives of the 44 western counties met and declared that they constituted the "Loyal and Restored Government of Virginia" and declared tht they were "the government of the State of Virginia in exile". As the "legitimate" legislature of the State of Virginia they declared their separation from Virginia and the process was accepted by the US Congress in 1863. Lincoln, a pretty good country lawyer himself, initially questioned the concept but eventually agreed that the "letter of the law" had been followed and he backed the creation of the State of West Virginia.

Was it legal? If you are a southron, probably not, but the US Supreme Court has ruled on a couple of occasions that West Virginia is a legitimate state and Virginia eventually had to give up all of its claims on the 55 western counties. So West Virginia exists as a State and will remain.

Hope this helps.|||Had they gone to the Supreme Court instead of Manassas Junction, there might very well be a Confederate States of America today. And Lord knows what would have become of Maryland, where a chunk of the legislature were arrested and habeus corpus suspended to prevent the southern sympathizers' voting. It's Realpolitik, where might makes right.|||Let me explain the Constitutional mechanics of it.

Article IV/Section III says that new states can be admitted, but that no new state can be made from another state, or parts of states without the states' permission. Now, here's what happened...

When the Commonwealth of Virginia held a convention to determine whether or not to secede from the union, the delegates from the western portion of the state (where slavery never took root) said no. They further stated that they would not accept as valid any attempt made to secede.

They were outvoted, and the state seceded. But true to their word, the western delegates would not accept it, and so convened a new legislature in the city of Wheeling. Since the United States did not recognize the legitimacy of the state of Virginia seceding from the union, President Lincoln recognized the Wheeling legislature as the sole legitimate legislature for the WHOLE state of Virginia.

This legislature was invited to send Representatives and Senators to Congress. And pursuant to the Constitution, the Wheeling legislature redrew it's own borders, and ceded back to the United States the rebellious counties of the east for later reconstruction after the war.

Remember, the Constitution says that new states cannot be created from old states UNLESS the state agrees. And because the Wheeling legislature was recognized in law as the legitimate government for the whole state, they could make it work.

After the war, the Commonwealth of Virginia challenged this in the Supreme Court, and lost. The Court's reasoning was essentially the reasoning I've just shared with you.

Hope this helps. Cheers, mate.|||The advent of the American Civil War fueled new desires for a politically separate western area. At the Virginia secession convention of April 1861 a majority of the western delegates opposed secession. In subsequent meetings at Wheeling (May 1861), dominated by the western delegates, the ordinance of secession was declared an illegal attempt to overthrow the federal government. The second Wheeling convention (June) pronounced the Richmond government void, established a restored Government of Virginia, and provided for the election of new state officers. The restored governor, Francis H. Pierpont, secured federal recognition and maintained civil jurisdiction over the region until Congress consented to the admission of West Virginia to the Union on June 20, 1863. A condition of entry was the gradual emancipation of slaves in the region. The capital was permanently established at Charleston in 1885.

Typically, whomever has christmas eve has to let the other parent have christmas day. Mothers get mother's day and father's get father's day. Each parent gets the child on their birthday, and they share the child's birthday. Easter is not recognized by the courts, so whomever has him on that weekend gets the child on that holiday.|||In this case then I would go by your child's school calendar. This won't work for the summer but from there you can select every other one or agree who gets what. Keep in mind, your child is not a pawn in all this and the more you both argue and disagree then the harder it will be on him. Kids feel the tention in their parents.|||There should be an official holiday list with times in the divorce/custody paperwork.......If not, you need to contact the court and have it amended to be added in.

Im buying a car in virginia but live in PA, on the invoice there is a fee for "Dealers Business License Tax" of $44.24.

    What is this tax?
Am I required to pay this fee or is this another "Processing Fee" they try to slip by ya?|||If you will be paying PA sales tax and registering the vehicle in PA yourself, the only fees to which you should be subject are any temporary registration the dealer provides and locally-imposed taxes like "tire taxes" and, of course, the dreaded "notary and documentation fee" (read "additional dealer profit").

In the case of the Virginia Dealer Business License Tax, according to the Commonwealth Motor Vehicle Dealer Board, the cost of this tax MAY be passed-along to customers if:

If it is listed as a line item on the Buyer鈥檚 order.
If the charge represents the exact amount relative to the sale.
If the local city, county, or town charges such a tax.

You can find the relevant regulation described here:

    http://www.mvdb.virginia.gov/pdfs/MVDB34鈥?/a>

While it's up to you whether to knuckle-under on paying a tax that isn't necessarily levied upon the sale of a particular vehicle and the dealer trying to recoup as part of a greater business expense, I'd say its as reasonable to ask you to pay their licensing fees as it would be for you to deduct the cost of your driver license and insurance.

Best of luck. I hope this helps.

Have you ever ridden a chopper? Choppers ride like a rock. They are VERY hard to handle any way but in a straight line. You can drop one very easily and it takes 2 to pick one up. The long front ends are hard on the frame and most frames have to be cut and modified to accept them. I've rode choppers and they suck! Most of them will not ride 2 people so your girlfriend can't ride with you.
I often wonder how many people buy a chopper, ride it once or twice, and then park them or sell them at a loss just to be rid of the monsters. Looks aren't everything.Consider these facts carefully before tearing up a good motorcycle. They make very expensive yard ornaments.|||If you haven't got the bike yet you should just buy a chopper or build one from scratch. Can you buy a rigid frame for a virago motor or are you going to build one? What about the wiring harness?you don't want a big bulky harness hanging from an old school chopper.Or can you wire it from scratch and make it look right? There's alot involved.Better think twice before you jump into it.Do you realize how much a good shop is going to charge you for something like this?lots and lots of bucks.

The non-stop ones are pretty close to $3,600 for most of them, some of the 1-stop flights are actually quite a bit less - but you might be stopping in Newark (which makes sense), or Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Kennedy or any of a bunch of other places.

First class will be significantly more.

What would be the basic tools (no rifles or Handguns....at first) that one could fit into a back pack to survive for months in the Forest?|||When I hit rock bottom, I left my town and lived in the forest for 1.5 years, All I had was 200 feet of paracord, A utility knife, Multitool, military grade water resistant soft tarp, survival spade, a portable CB radio, flare gun and a blanket. thats what I STARTED out with, after a year I had made a home well hidden from anyone who was out there.

The Weather Channel predicted Thursday the Virginia area could see a Category 2 Irene with 100 mph winds on Sunday morning.

All residents from the Carolinas northward through New England should be heeding advice from local officials, he said. Parts of North Carolina, especially the Outer Banks are under mandatory evacuations.

Governor Bob McDonnell declared a state of emergency in Virginia in preparation for Hurricane Irene, which is anticipated to affect the Commonwealth over the weekend. Hurricane Irene continues to move north from the Bahamas as a Category 3 hurricane with 115-mile per hour winds today. A hurricane warning is in effect there; a watch is now in effect for North Carolina up to the border of Virginia. "

I'm working on a brochure and I need to describe the social life in Virginia, something that we haven't gone over....I'm having NO luck finding anything. Can anyone help? Thank you!||| Still, Americans found entertainment in folk music, conversation, a handful of books, and newspapers.

"The Quadrille which originated in 1740 is considered the start of traditional Square dancing."|||Well, George Washington made whiskey and there were often bar-b-ques and parties, etc that lasted for several days. I know this sounds like I am kidding but bar-b-queuing did start in colonial America and these gathering were large and did last several days. Beer, whiskey, cider were drank as well as all manner of foods.

Back then, timing of when you ate was much different than now. The wealthy or patrons, generally rose later, road horses and then came in for the breakfast. They may have eaten in mid afternoon like a " Tea" and then ate later at night. Many dinners were the point of the whole night.

The lower working class rose earlier and didn't have the same foods of course. They would dance cotillions and have chamber music and "barn raising's" were where most working class people had their large gatherings. There are many recipes of those foods and drinks they had back then and can be found on line.

I went to visit my cousins and they sound different than the people in other southern states. Sounds close to a northern accent. Anyway, what kind of accent do they have? If anyone lives in virginia or watever. Let me know. (:Thx.|||There are many different accents in Virginia. The accents that would collectively be called "a Virginia accent" would sound very Southern to you. Many people in Virginia are transplants from up north, so it is not uncommon to hear an accent that isn't southern.

It took me a while to find you a good example on Youtube because there were so many of them that started out "I live just outside DC" or "my father is from Connecticut". This is representative of Virginia in that there are many people who don't have a "real" Virginia accent.

The girl in the video has a traditional Virginia accent, not an Appalachian accent or a real hillbilly (rural) Virginia accent.

At the end, you'll hear her talk about how she tries to reduce her accent, and for about 10 seconds at the end she speaks without holding back, but you should be able to hear her accent throughout the video.|||Well I used to live in Cana, VA. I want to become a private detective in Maryland and Virginia and I am having trouble finding all the information I need. Is there a class/certification I need to take or do I just find an agency willing to hire me and fill out paperwork for the license? Do I need any further training to get licensed to serve court papers?|||A lot of the info is kind of confusing and here is why: A private detective is both a job title and a type of company under state law. In order to be a private investigator, you have to work for a Private Detective Agency which are licensed by the state. You might see solo detectives in the yellow pages and such, but how that works is they started a company first (including getting all the licenses and insurances to run a company) and they just happen to be the only employee (i.e. they are self-employed). You can't start a Private Detective Agency if you have no prior experience, plus it has a lot of other complex requirements. So if you want to be a detective, you have to apply to an existing agency, and during the hiring process, they will give you the needed forms and requirements.

You duties vary based on what the hiring agency needs. Often new hires have more low-risk assignments.

  • I live in Virginia, and I will be a senior this fall at my school. Anyway it is around that time to start considering what you are going to do for the rest of your life. I want to be a pharmacist. However, I am not exactly sure how to go about doing that. I have already planned to go to my community college. They have a Pharmacy program, but one is a certificate, and the other is a Associates. I guess I would go for the Associates. But after that I do not know what to do. Could someone please shed some light on my confusion, and help me out?|||You will need to take two years of pre-pharmacy, which you will probably be able to do at a community college, then you will need to apply to pharmacy programs at the colleges in your area. Pharmacy school takes an additional four years and you will graduate with a doctorate. You then have to take the licensing exam for your state.

You will need to make sure that whichever pharmacy schools you plan on applying to will accept community college credits. Most do but some don't.

I don't live in Virginia, but I'm pretty sure that the education process is the same for all states. I would talk to a counselor at the school you plan on attending. The shorter pharmacy course that the community college is offering is probably just Pharmacy Tech. I think you only need a certificate to be a tech. I've been looking online at several places that offer courses, but none really show how much it will cost. I want to become a Virginia Conservation Officer eventually. |||I understand your question. The problem is that what you are asking for is no longer offered in Virginia. It used to be, up until a few years ago. It is still legal, but none of the agencies do it. Thus, I can not give you a quote. (RRCJA used to charge appx. $4000.)

The problem was that you can not go through firearms training without an agency to sponsor you. Thus, you can not technically graduate from the academy. You would spend all that time and then end up with nothing.

However, there is another option. Look for agencies that allow reserve officers. (IE: Bowling Green in Caroline County, Tappahannock County, etc.) A reserve officer is a volunteer position. Most agencies will send you to the academy on their dime.

There are 25 dead and 4 missing (dead) in the West Virginia mine explosion and hundreds of safety violations in the mine in the last year. (fifty in the last thirty days) It evidently is cheaper to pay the fines for the violations than it is to make the mines safe for the workers. Why shouldn't someone go to jail for these senseless deaths? Isn't this involuntary manslaughter?|||While working in the Chicago area in 1985 there was a company that was using illegal aliens in their establishment where they were reclaiming the silver in used photographic films. They were using poisonous chemicals (cyanide for one) and the workers were complaining of nausea and headaches. They were told by their bosses to live with it or quit as they were illegal and had no rights. Eventually, I believe it was 3, employees died from exposure to the chemical. To the credit of the Cook County authorities, they investigated the working conditions and filed murder charges against the supervision and owners of the company. Several where convicted of manslaughter and served prison terms. It is readily apparent that the management of this Coal Company have a total disregard for the lives of their first line employees. Perhaps it is time murder charges were filed against them and a little prison time would change their views. Of course, this would necessitate a Prosecutor that isn't in the company's pockets.|||You are not going to believe this, and I'm too tired to find a link, but companies like this, that do dangerous work, actually do a cost analysis and figure out if it's cheaper to pay fines for violations or pay off families in lawsuits, and many times it's cheaper to pay off the families than to run the business properly and safely. They consider it a cost of doing business. I think life in prison for the owner might make that profit risk seem not so appealing.|||They don't go to jail for violations, but regulators can (and should have) shut the mine down.

What factors explain the development of indentured servitude in early seventeenth century Virginia? What factors led the large Virginia planters to shift from a labor system based upon indentured servitude to one based on slavery? What role did Bacon鈥檚 Rebellion play in this change? What impact did the development of slavery in Virginia have on the social and legal status of blacks in the colony?|||Indentured servitude was a response to the joint need of people to pay for transit to emigrate from Britain, and the need for labor in the farmers.

Bacon's Rebellion changed all that - you couldn't tell just by looking at someone if they were supposed to be free or not during it - so they brought over dark skinned people so that they could discriminate more easily. There were a few slaves before this, but this was the event that basically caused the transition from indentured servitude to slavery.

As a result of equating blacks and slaves, as you can imagine, the rights of free blacks in the colonies went sharply downhill, especially in areas where slaves were common (such as the south).|||Each one of your questions would require a 3 to 5 sentence answer, minimum! You asked 5 questions! I will give you the basic and easiest answer to one or two of your questions. There are great books that are dedicated to each of your individual answers.

Indentured servitude shifted to slavery for two reasons. Greed of course because you went from having someone for 5 to 10 years, to having someone for life. Also many indentured servants would eventually run away and blend in since they were often of European decent. They could easily blend in with people in other towns across the colonies.

Your last two questions are very complex and I would buy books on this. I do not want to answer and not do the question any justice. Unless you need it for school. Still not easily answered on yahoo. But if that is the case. Do your own homework! :-)|||In the agreement for indentured service there was usually freedom clause after a certain period of time served. Many times these clauses would include a tract of land. Other wise Virgina couldn't have gotten anyone to come from Europe in the first place. No such freedom or land was granted for slaves in most cases. As far as Bacon's Rebellion. I'll let you do your own research on that one.

Pineapple's don't even grow here.|||Pineapples were a traditional symbol of hospitality. • When i was like in 1st grade i dreamed of becoming a teacher. i later decided it just wasnt for me as other interests arose. now i am once again wanting to be a teacher. i am a high school senior and this is one of my potential career choices. i know its not the highest paying job but im really interested in it. i love every aspect about teaching. so my questions are: how many years of college would i need to go through, is it terribly hard becoming one, what classes must i take in college?

for new teachers in virginia: are there certain state tests that are required? could you tell me where you went to college and if you are happy with your career choice?

thanks!|||Welcome! I hope things go well for you.
I'm not from Virginia, but I am a fairly new teacher.

    1. Find a college that you are comfortable with. One that has good professors in the teaching area and the one that goes out of it's way to make you feel welcome. Also look for one that has partnerships in local schools (ask YOUR teachers for recomendations too!)
    2. Hit the books. There are a lot of educational theorists, and you'll be tested on them all! The good news is that most of it is common sense. I'm sure you'll do fine.
Since you asked: You'll have the general college classes (2 englishes, a couple of maths and sciences, history, etc.) on top of that you'll take some specialized education classes (Child Development, Child Psycology, Educational Methods, atleast one class on Special Education). Then you'll do student teaching. Becoming a teacher isn't hard or time consuming. A typical program will allow you to graduate in 4 years.
    3. Get additional certifications. Finding a job in elementary is difficult (next to impossible in some areas). Get your foot in the door by being ESL, SPED, Title 1 certified.
    4. Yes, there are almost always certification tests. They are pretty basic, and you shouldn't have dificulty passing.
    5. Find that job! Be flexible as to where you teach, the nearest job isn't always the best so be ready to move.
    6. The first year is hell.
    7. The second year is a lot better.
    8. The third year is a breeze compared to the first two.

Good luck, I hope I haven't scared you! We need more young teachers who are passionate about helping others learn!|||Congratulations on your choice, it's a satisfying profession! In VA you need to complete a bachelors degree. The State of Virginia does not offer an undergraduate program in Education / to teach in the public schools. That's really becuase they want to have outstanding teachers! Once you get your BA or BS you may choose to take 15 graduate credits or do a Masters Degree in education. You will need to take some prerequisites courses before entering an education program; some students choose to take some of the courses while going through ed. school. If you can, try to take them while you are working on your undergraduate; it will alleviate on stress...and give you time to learn and enjoy your student teaching experience. To get certified you now need to take the Praxis Exams and that depends on the area that you choose to become certified. Most likely you will need to take the Praxis I and 2 (#1 is general: reading, writing, and math. #2 is the area of specialty you choose). The Praxis is not that hard if you are disciplined, really you shouldn't have a problem passing them. You should try to take them before finishing your ed. program, so the university will have your scores, GPA and they will submit them and reccommend the State to certify you. You may also choose to take the tests later, get a provissionat teaching license, you will be able to teach in the public schools; then YOU will submit everything to the state once you have completed taking the tests. My best advice for a successful career is to always be ahead of the game, it really pays off to have objectives and plan ahead! If you love teaching you have a great future ahead of you. Find a good university, find out what the state requires to become a teacher, and talk and ask questions to professors and students. Best wishes!|||Congratulations on wanting to teach! That is a wonderful career to get into, despite what anyone says. You will need a bachelor's degree, which can be done in four years. If you want a master's, that's another two years, you will get paid more, and could teach college if you wanted. I went to James Madison University, and I highly recommend it. Unless you are going to be a music teacher, your first two years will mainly be general studies classes, then after that you will focus on your major, whether it's math, English, elementary ed., whatever. All teachers must pass the national teacher exams (NTEs) to become licensed by the state of Virginia. I could go on for hours about the benefits, and also the negatives, of going into teaching. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

  • My husband is getting out of the Marine Corps and we're doing a dity move. We have to get a weighmaster to weigh our truck, but no one seems to know what that is. Where can I find one in Southwest Virginia?|||Go to any truck weighing station along the interstate.

Otherwise, go to any plant that loads trucks and ask them if they would be willing to quickly weigh your truck.

When my son worked at a sugar factory, they had a weighmaster. They would have done that for you, no problem.

If you are having trouble locating a weigh station, call a national trucking company, like CR England, or Swift...their dispatcher can probably point you to the nearest one to you.|||Truckstops with CAT certified scales are your best bet . State DOT scales will not weigh you for that purpose. Some truckstops use Interstate Certified Scales which are also good. Not knowing a town you are near I suggest doing a web search for Pilot Truckstops , Loves Country Stores, Travel Centers of America , Petro Truckstops and Flying J Truckstops , they all will have one of the two scales. To avoid any discrepancies , weigh the truck first , then when loaded . By using certified scales no one can dispute the weight you get paid for.|||I would think your base has a "weigh" to weigh trucks. If you have trucks, you must weigh them for safety and compliance. I am trying to get licensed and bonded for my cleaning business in Virginia.
What are the steps that I need to take? Is it through the government or a privately owned business?|||In regards to a license, you should check to see if your local community requires a business license for general cleaning, many don't.

Insurance is for your protection, you should discuss it with a local insurance agent.

As for bonding, that's for your client's protection and could help you get work.

What you are looking for is a Janitorial Bond. It is a form of a fidelity bond and very similar to insurance. It protects your clients in the event an employee is arrested and convicted for stealing from them. You will not be expected to cover the loss.

The rates are based upon the number of employees and the amount of coverage. They range from a $5000 bond with less than 5 employees at $100 to a $100,000 with 25 employees less than $800.

These are instant issue bonds are readily available on the internet. You can run a Google search for Janitorial Bond and find a site that has on line submissions. One of those sites processing on line applications is www.southcoastsurety.com.

You can get more information on this bond and a link to the application at http://southcoastsurety.com/fidelity-bon鈥?/a>|||You will have to do some legwork to find out who regulates the license you are looking to obtain. You will want to ask the licensing department what their requirements for obtain a license are to ensure you can meet all of their standards. Some common requirements include, but are not limited to: passing a test, meeting certain financial requirements, industry experience, clean criminal records, and of course, a surety bond. I can not comment too much on licensing requirements, as they vary greatly depending on occupation and the location of where you are planning on operating. Fortunately, I can go into great detail about getting bonded! As stated above, you are going to want to make certain you can meet all of the requirements to qualify for a license. This is extremely important, as most bonding companies will not do pro-rated returns on cancellations of first year bonds. To get bonded, you will need to find a bond producer (also known as a bond agent). Just as in any profession, the level of competence varies greatly. If you are in need of a bond producer, you should read our article What Makes A Good Surety Bond Producer.|||A bond is an insurance product; so you'd start with the guy who does your business insurance or your house or car insurance, to see if he can write a bond for you. If he can't, he can give you a referral to a LOCAL agent who can.

Keep in mind, a bond probably doesn't do what you probably think it does - it's payable to ONLY the obligee (person) and isn't transferrable. The only person who can "claim" on it, is the person you named when you first take it out.

They have a listing of veterinary clinics and animal hospitals in the area that participate in their program. You buy the reduced spay/neuter certificate from them and then call the animal hospital you chose to set up the appt. The price depends on which animal hospital you choose and the sevices they include.

I chose Del Ray Animal Hospital over near Potomac Yards. It was a little pricier than some of the the others but I know they have a great reputaion. The total was right around $225.|||Most areas have discount spay and neuter clinics. Call a local rescue or the SPCA because they can probably recommend one in the area. There are lots of options when getting your pet spayed to consider. Remember that a spay is fairly intrusive and must be painful for your pup. You will be offered things like a fluids IV during the surgery to help the dog stay hydrated (and heal faster afterwards) and a variety of pain meds. Some places offer pain meds in pill form, or shots or both. These all add to the cost.

It's hard to know what to do. Some dogs bounce back very quickly and others seem to be feeling it for a while, it's hard to tell which camp your dog will fall into. If you can get the dog a pain shot that's given after the surgery, I'd go with that. They're strong and may be enough if your dog bounces back quickly. Then, if they need more you can always go back and get pills. Please consider this in your cost, I know many people don't and its not fair to the dog. Who would want to have your dog in pain when $20 of pills can make them more comfortable!

Virginia conceal carry at work?|||The only problem would be if your company has a zero tolerance for weapons in the work place. If they do, you can get fired, but not arrested. Its one of the few firearms laws that still need to be challenged in front of SCOTUS|||Yes, they could carry the firearm to work. However, most employers would fire you for that because they have policies explicitly forbidding it. Otherwise it would be illegal (via trespassing) if your state allows businesses to post signs saying "No firearms permitted in these premises" or something similar, as if you do not follow that, you are trespassing.|||I agree with the other answers but I would even expand that to any privately owned building or property.

I have heard that residential home-owners who are Virginia citizens do not own the crude oil deposits that lie underneath the soil within their own property boundaries in Virginia. Is this correct?|||It is probably correct. There are several possible reasons why.
Most likely the original land owner (farmer?) still owns the minerals. It is often the case when selling property to developers. If he did sell the mineral rights to the developer, then most likely that is where the mineral rights are today.
An alternative is that the state itself owns the minerals. It really is dependent on the property ownership previous to the active development of the area.
Secondarily, it is dependent on whether your area has coal, oil or gas present on it on whether mineral development may occur. With any of these, horizontal or deviated excavation/drilling can be attempted from outside the developed area.|||not you

99.99% of property that is sold since 1940 is without mineral or oil rights.

The in-state tuition is about 20,000 less, so I'm considering going and changing to Virginia residency in my sophomore year to save some money. Has anyone attempted this process or have some knowledge of how difficult it would be? Is there a specific number of hours one has to work to demonstrate commitment?|||To gain residency has nothing to do with the school. In order to gain residency in VA you have to get a driver's license and register to vote. Paying taxes, registering a vehicle, obtaining a bill (like a cell phone bill) using your dorm address would all help towards establishing the fact that you intend to be a resident. You have to have this for a year, however, so the day that you touch down in Virginia run to the Charlottesville DMV and transfer over your driver's license and register to vote. This way, by the time next year rolls around you can fill out the form for in state tuition consideration and see a significant decrease in the amount of money you'll be paying out.

Good luck and have fun at UVA :)

according to police reports they ruled out the shootings as being an act of terrorism...ok...so what makes it terrorism??

Does the killer have to be middle-eastern?
Does the killer have to use a car bomb instead of a gun?
Does he need to fly a plane into a building or carry a koran?

...this was a planned event. The killer purchased 2 weapons at 2 different times. He allegedly sent written bomb threats at an earlier time to test security. This wasnt a disturbed individual who just snapped. He has been planning this for awhile.

...What would make the Virginia Shooting an act of terrorism?|||Premeditated mass murder is not terrorism. Holding a grudge and/or being mentally unbalanced is not terrorism.

Terrorism - which does not always involve murder (can be kidnapping, sabotage, etc.) - is aymmetrical action against authority, the deliberate act of instilling fear in order to motivate political change.

What makes it terrorism is the kind of followup response you are trying to elicit, not simply the act.

One more important distinction - insurgence is not necessarily terrorism. Or let me put it this way, if native Iraqis taking up arms against U.S. occupiers are terrorists, then so was the celebrated insurgent, George Washington. Granted, there are terrorists in Iraq - the foreign fighters certainly fall into that camp as do those who target civilians.|||well terrorism are warfare tactics from small and weak countries with no military might to make a statement. I dont think South Korea sent that boy over here to shoot people and make a political statement.|||I think the shooting was an act of terrorism and there would be a reason behind the shooting, ie. asians are mistreated at VA Tech. Doubt it, maybe he plays too many online games.

But I don't think they will know a reason until everything is said and done. This was done by a disturbed young man!|||This is NOT an act of terrorism for 2 reasons.

    1. Terrorism is defined as "a pre-meditated violent action against people or persons for political purposes or a political cause" This can be through ANY violence - not just guns and bombs.

    2. The killer in this instance had psychological / psychotic tendancies and did this because of SELFISH issues. Issues being Psychopathic / Psychotic tendancies.

Terrorism has to be PRE-MEDITATED AND POLITICAL.

Example - If you and your family are being attacked and the reason for you being attacked was "POLITICAL". You then DEFEND yourself ... by definition you are NOT a terrorist as the action has to be PRE-MEDITATED AND POLITICAL.

You COULD argue the war in Iraq is an "act of Terrorism" by the US government as there is NO EVIDENCE that the US was in "imminent danger" and didn't have to defend itself and they did carry out a PRE_MEDITATED attack.

Finally being middle eastern has NOTHING to do with Terrorism|||How about we keep it simple. No political involvement.

It's not always about hate for a religion.

QUOTE YOU: This wasnt a disturbed individual who just snapped

Seems it actually is|||The assumptions you make - mainly that "terrorism" is a vague ambiguous word devoid of factual truth, is correct. "Terrorism" is _arbitrarily_ used by some to justify "defensive" or pro-active measures against a perceived threat.. The political/apolitical distinction raised by "wiz" (above) in arbitrarily defining "terrorism" seems on the surface to have some truth. However, the 911 attacks were not only against the Pentagon, but also a "trade" center, suggesting a disgust by the "terrorists" with the economics of the target (perhaps the "terrorists" were ranting against capitalism). Similarly, the V Tech shooter seemed to have a rage against unjust economic policies which he felt enriched people unfairly. Although a capitalist country is by definition a country which espouses laissez faire (freedom of the markets), the reality is that in every Country, including the US, there is a hybrid capitalist/socialist system whereby the Government steps in to control the economy (Greenspan a simple example).. Thus the V-Tech shooter was expressing disgust with a perceived economic reality which arguably and probably partially resulted from Government action. Thus the shooter ought to be labeled a "terrorist" as well. He will not, though, because the US has no general National interest in addressing the South Korean government, nor does the US Government have as its political agenda a stance or plan for addressing a "loner's" tendency to snap under pressure.|||It's a fine line, but the VT shooting apparently was done by one person driven by his own perceived personal slights, i.e., his girlfriend cheating on him and (supposedly) bad-mouthing him to their friends.

Terrorist acts are "usually" done as part of an organized group movement protesting the existing government and trying to foment change...or attacking another group, i.e., a religion, with a different philosophy. The underlying goal is to create change. Personal revenge does not have that goal.

I did hear that there was a note that said he was angry at his fellow students' materialistic attitudes. If that is true...and I don't know the details, so I'm not saying it is...one "could" make the argument that it was a quasi-terrorist act, but the primary driving force seems to be his own personal anger at his girlfriend and classmates.|||great question?|||I don't think it is an act of terrorism because the killer(s) even if he had prepared is crime, targetted innocent people who represented the source of his frustrations and lack of self confidence...... An act of terrorism tends to be politically motivated (even when the cover of religion is used). The killer was most probably mentally instable... Anguish and pain altough not planned, is something that grows on you and the worst it get the more urgent it is for you to find relieve, but still leaving you enough time to find ways (evil !) of escaping the pain.... This is a very sad event which unfortunately is becoming to frequent in the States|||Well Homeland Security considers child prostitution in Taiwan worth sending people to investigate and gangs in LA a homeland threat so I am sure they will throw out the "T" word to get their fingers in the news feeding frenzy. Which will allow for a larger budget as they justify their jobs over the graves of these young people.|||That is a great question|||It is terrorism in a sense, because it has stuck fear in the general public. I don't think it was his intent to strike fear in the population though, it was simply to kill people.

The idea that he planned it, just means that it was premeditated.|||Cho signed his long letter as "Ishmael X"--this tells me that he was a convert to ISLAM--and therefore, another rampaging Muuuuuslim terrorist.

Does anyone know where I can find birth records/certificates of people in Virginia around this time? Every commissioner of revenue registered births and deaths in his district annually and forwarded the information to the clerk of court, who then supplied the information to the state Auditor of Public Accounts. This law continued in effect until 1896. The Auditor turned the lists over to the Bureau of Vital Statistics in 1918 and the registers were later transferred to the state archives. The Library of Virginia has copies of surviving birth and death records for the period 1853 to 1896 and marriage records prior to 1936."

My friend is being held in a jail in Pennsylvania and after his hearing on Wednesday, the state of Virginia will have the right to have him extradited there. They have to pick him up. What is there time limit to pick him up? My friend said it was ten days and after that they would have to file an extension and the max total is 30 days from the day that they are allowed to pick him up.|||I think that you are confusing the time limit for the action on the detainer with the order for extradition.

He is currently held on a detainer for a warrant of extradition and the courts have a limited amount of time to act on that. Since his court date is Wednesday, the time limit on the warrant is a moot point. The amount of time for extradition is generally set by the judge. On average, they will order that the extradition take place within 30 days.

Unless a flight is required, he will probably be picked up in15 days. The courts in Pennsylvania will have to notify the Sheriff's Office in Virginia of the court findings for the extradition process. They will probably sit on it for a few days before faxing it out. The Sheriff's Office in Virginia will probably take a few days to figure out the logistics of transporting the inmate back to the state.

Thanks!|||When applying for an apartment, they look at your income and financial history (credit rating and rental history). You're asked if you are a US citizen or permanent resident, but state residency is not required. If residency were required then half of the upperclassmen at George Washington University would be homeless. Generally, you get an apartment to establish residency (e.g., for school), not the other way around.

Now, if you are looking to apply for city assisted housing, you have to apply through the city - not directly to the apartment community - and there may or may not be any state residency requirements.

I live in the Richmond area and everything that I like is within reach: a good mix of urban, suburban, and rural within a 30 minute drive; and it is only two hours to the mountains, to the beach, and to DC.

The other two major urban areas are the northern Virginia area (Prince William County and points north) and the Virginia Beach/Hampton Roads/Norfolk area by the Chesapeake Bay/Atlantic Ocean. Again, they have everything that you would want to look for in an urban area. However, traffic in the NOVA area tends to be really bad.

Charlottesville is an interesting mix of urban and rural. With UVA there, they tend to get packed when there is a game, and dead when college is out.

There are two major amusement parks: Kings Dominion and Bush Gardens Williamsburg. Plenty of history, from the American Civil War all throughout, Williamsburg, Yorktown, etc.

Several major colleges: VCU, UVA, VUU, VSU, Va. Tech, William and Mary... Along with the accompanying night life/student life.

My fiance is from New Jersey. She complains about what is not here all the time, such as no delis like she is used to, the heat and humidity, the lack of snow and the fact that no one can drive in it. (There is snow, more so in the northern or western portions. However, being a warmer climate, snow melts when it hits the ground then refrezes into ice, making it more dangerous to drive in than in Yankee territories.)

Virginia is a little bit more laid back than other places. (With the exception of NOVA, but then again most everyone in NOVA is from out of state.) So, the state is what you are willing to make it.

Good luck with your move!|||what part of virginia you movin to? i live in western virginia. what do you want to know? majority of the people are friendly. northern va and richmond and east va (tidewater, hampton, newport news, ect..) are city folk. central va, shenandoah valley, roanoke, western virginia, southwest va are rednecks. humidity is pretty high.|||I just moved here too. It's really different because I am from Florida... Anyways, people are really friendly, I live in the capital, so there are enough malls and very busy. But I been to Powatan (spell?) and it's very deserted. Not many things to do in certain areas|||I just want to say I envy the four of you. I would love to move to Virgina too, but my wife and kids like it here in Northern Arizona.

Ever since visiting Colonial Williamsburg and the surrounding areas, green and beautiful.

Best to the four of you.|||You don't say where you are moving to in Virginia and the state is very diverse. Northern Virginia is quite different then the Piedmont area and the southern part of VA. There is a lot of history here and there are beautiful historical homes, gardens, and museums. I believe 5 Presidents were born here. The Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains are beautiful and worth a drive through. Williamsburg is a colonial village which has been restored. Norfolk has a big naval base and is close to Virginia Beach. As you can see Virginia has something to offer many people. If you want more information check with their Dept. of Tourism or look them up online. "Virginia is for Lovers".|||The nations capital is located there, Washington DC.

  • Its time to move out and I have been to Virginia before. I would like to become a resident there so I could get an apartment... Reason being is that you must be a resident of Virginia in 99% of the apartments.. The other 1% are very expensive ones.

    Edit upon further thought:
A Permanent resident is someone who is not a US citizen, but has a "green card."

I am active duty military and I hold a Florida drivers license. I'v never had a motorcycle license and I want to keep my Florida residency, but I need to get a motorcycle license here in Virginia. How is this possible?|||Armed forces personnel get a break on the rules, since all states share a reciprocal agreement if you pass the test in 1 state it is honored by the others and will added to your home state license.|||Take weeks leave and go back to Florida, it isn't that far. Just getting a Virginia license will not change your state of residency by the way, it takes more then that for military personnel.
You could try contacting the Florida department and ask if they would give you a motorcycle endorsement for your license with out having to return for the test due to your being on active duty they might waive the requirement. Here is the site: http://www.flhsmv.gov/

I just bought a GPS system, it says in the book that there are state regulations for mounting the device. Can someone tell me what the regulations are for the state of virginia or give me a helpful website?|||Virginia has no regulations concerning a GPS unit per se. (Some states do, such as California which does not allow mounting of a GPS unit at all!)

What you must be concerned with is an unobstructed view. In Virginia, you may not hang items off of the rear view mirror. (Rarely enforced... but don't press your luck.) Thus, place the GPS in a spot that will not obstruct your vision. I like placing mine to the top of the window, right of the rear view mirror. You may not be able to reach it there. If possible, maybe you should place it low and to the far left of the drivers column.

A second thing you should pay attention to is to not get distracted by the GPS! Secure it in place while parked. Enter the destination information while parked. Why? If you are in an accident and you state that you were "adjusting the GPS" (or talking on the phone, changing the radio station, etc.) you could be found at fault of the accident (even if the other person was primary) and also charged with Reckless Driving. (Example, my friend was properly in his lane when an oncoming truck crossed the double yellow line and their mirrors connected, breaking both off. He was on his cell phone at the time and told the officer so. He was not paying full attention to driving thus he was charged with Reckless Driving. Fortunately, he was able to plea it down in court.)

I can not seem to find the exact sections of the Virginia State Code online, and I am to lazy to go out to my car to grab my code book.

    Good luck!

I have an investment property that I can no longer make payments on and wanted to see if the lender can come after my salary, 401k, etc. in Virginia if I walk away from the house.|||If the lender forecloses and sells the property for less than you owe (including all the foreclosure fees, interest, per diems, selling costs, etc.), it can sue you for the balance. If the lender then gets a judgment against you, your pay is subject to garnishment, your real estate can be liened and your bank accounts can be seized. Your 401k is probably exempt.

Also, be aware that judgments are valid for a very long time - 20 years in some states. They also accrue interest until paid - at much better than market rates.|||Yes, the lender can do that, and will strongly consider doing so if you have sufficient assets and income to pay off any deficiency judgment involved.|||They can come after your wages/salary and ask the court to garnish your wages. Your 401(k) may be out of bounds - check with a lawyer before doing anything.

I really need help! I want to go to a college out of state but I want it to have Virginia instate tuition.|||I think you mean that you are a Virginia resident and want to go to a college outside of Virginia where you will pay Virginia instate tuition fees. If you live or go to high school in a county which borders another state, there might be some colleges in the other state which have an arrangement with Virginia to charge their own instate tuition to Virginia residents. Your high school's college guidance counselor can help you if this situation applies to you.

I am not aware how you could pay Virginia instate tuition at an out of state college. Virginia is a large enough state that you can find a Virginia public college which is far enough away from home so that you feel that you have gone away to college. There is no particular advantage to going to a college just because it is in another state.

You might get some ideas about colleges to consider from the college finder at http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com.

Best wishes.|||Most colleges require you to be a resident for a minimum of 1 year, before they will give you in-state tuition rates.

Like what are the benefits of being there over being in Virginia? High Schools? Cost of living? Etc? How could I get them to want to move?|||I don't really think it's going to be easy to get them to move somewhere else if they're happy where they are. I know I'd never in a million years be able to convince my parents to move to a nearby town, let alone another state. You can always move to New Jersey on your own when you're older, and do you really want to leave everything (such as friends) behind?|||Honestly stay in Virgina.
    i love that state!

    Anyways.
New Jersey is over the top expensive. Tax is high also. The schools are very good. But if you don't wear certain clothes or you talk a certain way like if you talk all country or indian they will make fun of you. New Jersey'ans are somewhat stuckup. They don't like helping others. They all think they are the best. Literally. Some are nice, but good luck looking for nice people.

Virgina is such a nice place. You can always move to different parts in virginia, if your not satisfied about where you are living. Everyone down there are much more friendlier then NJ. Plus the houses in virgina are way cheaper, which is more affordable, for you and your family.

    Hope this helps a ton!
Derya =)|||Schools are way better in Virginia, and cost of living is probably better than most parts of New Jersey too.

We have several urban streams that could use some help in improving the water quality. What are good plantings in Virginia for improving the water downstream from here? Especially, what are some native plants that would grow well from seeds?|||I live near some urban streams in Raleigh, NC, and about 50 feet of one runs through my property. I'm very inspired by how well the native plants have handled the task of mitigating the pollution all by themselves. Like you, I consider myself a custodian of these places.

The plants that improve water quality the most are the ones that grow the fastest. The Chesapeake dead zone is caused by excess nutrients, and fast growing plants eat these up. The plants that grow the fastest are usually called weeds, and they don't need much help from us to spread their seed. The native plants that are crowded out were adapted to a different environment, where fertilizer didn't leach into the water from lawns and rain water didn't surge in from storm drains.

That doesn't mean there is nothing you can do; we can have a great impact on water quality by building structures that capture water and filter it through soil rich in plant roots. This is called rain gardening; I've attached some links below. The rule of thumb is to "slow, spread and sink" the water into the soil, rather than pave, pipe, pollute it. But you have to do it before the water joins a creek; damming running water is best left to engineers and beavers, because it can cause substantial damage.

There are some native plants that feed wildlife that don't spread well in an urban setting. Pawpaw trees only grow in a mature forest, and persimmons only sprout where deer carry the seeds. Groundnut (apops americana) was a native ameican staple food that grew on stream banks.

Amphibians are very vulnerable to poulltuion, and if you create a backyard pond near a stream for them to breed it will help maintain their population.

I believe that there is a lot you can do in terms of stream remediation, and if just one person on every creek did this it would have a huge impact on the water quality of the Chesapeake. I'm learning to do this on the stream system where I live, and would love to share what I鈥檝e learned. There is some way to send an email through yahoo answers- feel free to.|||Here in NC we can not plant or build anything around most streams or rivers any more. I'm debating whether I should go to UGA law or a law school in Virginia. I am from the Atlanta area. What is Northern Virginia and the Virginia Beach area like? I also want to live in a somewhat wealthy area, as I want to practice in estate & wealth planning. Any recommendations?|||UVA is one of the nation's top law schools and you can go practice law anywhere after you get the degree. Northern Virginia has terrible traffic but lots of jobs for lawyers. Housing prices are also very high. Fairfax County, VA is one of the wealthiest in the USA.|||I've lived in Northern VA, outside of VA Beach, and Atlanta. In terms of traffic, both areas of Virginia have horrendous traffic, although it's comparable to Atlanta's traffic. If the traffic is really an issue, stick with UGA. Athens doesn't have bad traffic at all. Furthermore, although you mention you want to live in a wealthy area, the cost of living for both parts of Virginia will be tough on a law school stipend. UGA may not be as great of a school for law as some of the options in VA, but monetarily and trafficwise, it may be the better option. The winters around VA Beach aren't too bad, and of course the DC area is pretty cold. Both places are great to live though. |||You're not asking for much now are you? I'm sure supporters of both states will have their reasons for selecting their respective states. But if you're looking for wealth, I don't think you're going to find much better than the suburban Washington area.

I have a small garden this year and planted pole beans, peppers, cucumbers, roma tomatoes, pumpkin and egg plant.

The cucumbers, tomatoes & pole beans are growing, the pumpkins are in bloom too, but the two eggplants (bought already grown from Lowes) didn't make it. The peppers, that were sprouts when I planted them, didn't make it either.

Any idea what will grow best in South West Virginia?

I was wondering what I might have done wrong with my eggplants.

Also, does anyone know if watermelon will grow well here.|||Tomatoes. South West Virginia is Hardiness Zone 7. Read the tags on plants at the nursery (Lowe's, Home Depot also). If you are looking for veggies - those are annuals anyway, and most should grow fine. Peppers, Cukes, Strawberries, Sunflowers, Cantelope, etc. Your eggplants should do great - with some good soil, bug spray, and water. Watermelon will grow there! Yes indeed.

There are methods to improve your soil also. consider learning how to compost your garbage. Mix leaves, sticks, garbage and dirt in layers. Next year it will make your garden fantastic. The more you do this, the better it gets!

From your comments, seems that you need to learn about watering (proper amount) and fertilizer. Also, bugs are plant killers.|||We've had something of a drought here in VA, that might have done in your eggplants & peppers.

In the year 1606, when James I was king of England, he gave a charter or patent to a number of gentlemen, which made them the owners of all that part of America lying between the thirty-fourth and thirty-eighth degrees of north latitude. The men who received this gift associated themselves together under the name of the London Company, and in the same year sent out three vessels, carrying 105 men, but no women or children. A storm drove them out of their course, and, in the month of May, they entered the mouth of a broad river, which they named the James in honor of their king. • Excuse me but there are no fault lines in Virginia. The closest one is a thousand miles away. From my moderate knowledge of plate tectonics, earthquakes are, traditionally, due to one of two things: 1) release of energy due to friction between two plates or 2) volcanic activity. Neither of these apply to Virginia.|||First off, you are dead wrong about not having faults in Virginia. There was a quake, therefore they have a fault. *Everyplace* has faults.

However, you are correct about the 'traditional' causes, but this is definitely a non-traditional quake. This is likely a product of strain built up by millions of years of the North American plate getting squeezed and pushed by the other faults, and an ancient fault zone snapped.|||鈥?I was asking the same question my self and found this site (http://www.virginiaplaces.org/geology/qu鈥?/a> that kind of explains it:

"Two zones in Virginia are more susceptible to earthquakes than others, and can be identified by the rivers which follow those faults. The James River follows the Central Virginia Seismic Zone between Charlottesville and Richmond, while the New River follows the other zone from Radford to the West Virginia border...."
"...The US east of the Mississippi has many fewer earthquakes than does the west, and obviously western quakes are stronger, but eastern earthquakes can cause more damage away from their origin. In the east the underlying bedrock is pretty well-connected (like a concrete slab). Eastern earthquakes can travel farther that in the west, where the underlying topography is so chopped-up (like a brick patio) that the energy of a quake is dissipated closer to the epicenter..."|||The Virginia Piedmont is lousy with faults... the structural relationships are pretty darned complex- a mess of accreted terranes from continental assembly and break-up in the Paleozoic. There's no major, contemporary tectonic plate boundary like the San Andreas, but the region is seismically active along a number of fault systems- the Spotsylvania is one that I recollect offhand, though I have minimal firsthand knowledge of the region. Perhaps an East-Coast geologist can weigh in.|||200-300 million years ago, virginia was actually a place of significant tectonic activity. The fault lines under virginia scarred over when the area moved away from the fault. The scars are like little weak faults that can still have pressure and eventually snap causing a smaller earthquake. It is rare to see an earthquake with that powerful force result from a scar|||We've gotten earthquakes in east TN, and there are no tectonic plate edges through here, either. Are there any cheap options available in the neighbourhood of the school available where you can bunk in for a night and go to school the next day ?|||Your question got me interested. I've lived in this area for years and never heard of the University of Northern Virginia, so did some checking. Based on their website, it appears that while the school is licensed by Virginia, it is not accredited--at least by the mainstream accrediting organizations in the US. Were you aware of this? That doesn't necessarily mean that the school isn't good, but it does mean that many employers won't accept a degree from the school, nor can you easily transfer credits to another school. They also don't appear to advertise in the local media, and they have offices/campus overseas--it appears that they are targeting international students who want to get a visa to study in America, regardless of the school.

There may be a possibility that you could argue that the severance pay you received in 2006 was related to your non-Virginia period and therefore should not be subject to Virginia income tax. It doesn't matter where you got the ticket. Google it, but make sure the site you use is accredited. It will give you a certificate to print out when you're done that you send to the clerk of court office where you live (the official city on your license). You can contact your local clerk of courts office and they should be able to help you find an appropriate site to take the test - or it might have a link on their website. Just search for your county and "clerk of court." It doesn't matter that you got the ticket elsewhere, just that you live in Florida. If you are a Florida resident, then Florida is completely in charge of whether or not points are put on your license.

The test is super easy, costs about $40 and takes about 4 hours. If a state joined the confederacy, 9 times out of 10, it's considered a Southern state, regardless of it's geographical position.

Unfortunately for your friend, we don't always discern northern states from southern ones based on geography.|||anyone who says virginia is not the south is just dumb. my ansestors fought and died for there freedom and evan though our secound war of independence failed every man, women, and child in virginia owes a debt of gratitude to those who fought for there freedom against the union.

    |||The division of the Southern states vs. northern state is based on the Mason-Dixon line that separates Maryland from Pennsylvania. Yes, Virginia is a Southern state and was a Confederate state. Maryland is technically a Southern state and would have been a Confederate state if Abe Lincoln had not had the Md state legislature sequestered in a basement to keep them from voting for secession. Further West, the dividing line between north and South runs down the Ohio River to the Mississippi, then across the northern border of Missouri. West of that, there is really no distinction. It is simply considered the West.|||The connection with the Confederacy has some weight, but a better measure is that Virginia is south of the Mason-Dixon line, the border between Pennsylvania and Maryland.

I had my daughter there almost 2 years ago, and had an awful experience. My doctors were great (I had a c-section), but once they left me with hospital staff, my stay was anything but pleasant. I was in SO much pain right after surgery to the point where i started to go into shock, and when I told the nurse, all she said was, You know that it's gonna hurt, right?"

I had a few very nice nurses, but not a single one brought me my pain meds without me having to call and ask for it. It was every 3 hours for 3 or so days. I was exhausted, frustrated, and in pain the whole time.

The one in the yellow packet looks no different, except the colour of the packet. There is no description on the packet to explain any difference.|||There is supposed to be a difference. Read the following news release:

UK LAUNCH OF GOLDEN VIRGINIA YELLOW

Following an 18-month process of research and development, on 2nd March 2009, Imperial Tobacco launched its new Golden Virginia Yellow (GV Yellow) packs on to the roll-your-own market.

GV Yellow will be available in 12.5g, 25g and 50g packs, RRPs at 拢2.73, 拢5.35 and 拢10.59 respectively. Price marked packs are also available at 拢2.65 for a 12.5g pack and 拢5.25 for a 25g pack. Already available in Greece, Italy, Cyprus, Spain and the Canary Isalnds, Slovenia and Switzerland, volumes of GV Yellow grew 18% in 2008.

Iain Watkins, UK Trade Communications Manager at Imperial Tobacco described how Golden Virginia Yellow differs from the long-established Golden Virginia Green range: "Golden Virginia Green is made with hand-stripped tobaccos giving it a distinctive quality. New Golden Virginia Yellow is made from a different porcess, using the finest Virginia tobacco which gives it a smoother taste similiar to that of the smoother factory-made cigarette brands."

Roll your own tobacco is the only segment currently stimulating the UK tobacco category, and the 12 months ending October 2008 saw volume sales increase by nearly 12%.

Hey I'm going to Reston Virginia soon and I need to find out what the closest Amtrack station is to Reston Virginia. I'm planning on taking a taxi from that station the Reston so approximately how much would that be and which station would I be getting off at?|||The two closest are Washington Union Station in downtown DC and Alexandria, Virginia. Unfortunately Amtrak doesn't serve Reston or the surrounding areas. If you're coming from the north, there are many more trains to Washington Union Station than to Alexandria. If coming from the south, Alexandria might work out okay. Washington Union Station always has a line of cabs. It might be a bit harder to get a cab from Alexandria, although the Virginia cabs seem to know when a train is expected and show up in hopes of a fare.

While Rockville (the previous response), may be correct in terms of map miles, Rockville is served by only a couple of trains each day, and transportation between Rockville and Reston would be problematic and lengthy.

Be aware that, due to the distance, you will have a HIGH taxi fare. You might want to consider using the Metro subway to go part of the distance, say to the West Falls Church Metro station, and take a cab from there the rest of the way. Both Alexandria and Washington Union Station are served by Metro.

There are other options too, including using a Metro bus.

You should check Metro's website, which has a trip planner, for details:

I am not allergic to either one. But I would rather have a wreath made out of the creeper vine rather than the poison ivy vines. It doesn't have any leaves on it at this time of year.|||A clear distinction between the two: eastern poison ivy has three leaflets and Virginia creeper has five leaflets. At this time of year with no leaves you'd almost have to be a botanist I think to tell the difference.

My suggestion if you really want to use the vines is to wear long sleeves and gloves while making the wreaths and remove both directly after. Best choice would be to find some grape vines and just use the smaller one to make your wreath.|||Virginia Creeper looks like this:

If we consider that the onerous rules put in place years ago might benefit politicians over voters, then we must consider that it is time for voters to have more choices. They are supposed to withhold based on the state in which you WORK, not where you live. Sounds like you work in VA and that they should be withholding there. Many times though, especially for smaller companies, they will look for ways to NOT withhold VA taxes for you, since that would mean that your company would also have to file employer AND INCOME taxes in Virginia as well! The Dulles Corridor -- the areas near and around Dulles Airport -- has the highest concentration of tech companies. Lots of geeks means lots of fancy cell phones that might need repair.

As long as the date on the check is after the date you changed your legal residence, you're good to go.

Be prepared to prove the date your residence changed though! VA is noted for fighting this type of issue if the dates are close. Copies of leases, HUD-1 closing statements, travel receipts, vehicle registration records, voter registration records, etc. all can help you prove the date that you claim your legal residence changed.

Let's face it Obama won Virginia by 232,000 votes in 2008. How does the Republican candidate expect to win Virginia's 13 electoral votes next November. It is a state full of progressive people and the closer you get to DC the more support Obama has. Virginia may very well be the state that decides the election.|||Obama can lose in many ways. The first way is that he does not have a fighting spirit. He gave into the republicans many times before. I'm not trying to bring down Obama in anyway, it's just that his disapproval rating is quite high. So there is a possibility that he can lose.|||Obama is weaker than in 2008 but the GOP is also weaker. If they throw up a Tea Party candidate like Bachmann, Perry or Gingrich or a Libertarian like Paul, the GOP loses big. Romney will make a race of it because he will draw some of the moderate and Indy votes.|||Very easily...just look at what that incompetent, inexperienced man has done to America.

There is a bumper sticker that says it all:

"If you voted for Obama in 2008, because you did not want to be called racist, then vote against Obama in 2012, because you do not want to be called an idiot."|||this is how. he promised change the only change i see is the $11.5 trillion difference in our national debt. Bet your missing Bush now. huh. if you aren't then you are blind and dumb.|||That was when his approval rating was something like 70%. Today it is barely 40% and 55% disapprove. No one with these kinds of numbers has ever won.|||well let face it obama lost all his supporter trust, and definitely will lose all the state that voted for him in 2008.

people not gonna listen to his bullcrap again...|||Virginia will go republican in 2012

    bet your life on it

I'm a Junior in high school and I live in Virginia. I am really interested in being a Veterinarian! I am looking online and stuff, but I'm pretty sure I'm looking everywhere but the right place. I would love to become a veterinarian because I enjoy working with animals to help them! If anyone has good college suggestions for Virginia or overal tips that colleges look for to becoming a vet let me know! Thanks it means so much!|||You need a Bachelor's degree to attend vet school. This can be in any field as long as you take the required prerequisites for vet school.

There is one vet school in Virginia- Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine www.vetmed.vt.edu

There are only 28 vet schools in the US. Admission is extremely competitive. If you do get into any you most likely will have to leave your state.

  • Prior to the eighteenth century, any free man living in Virginia, had the right to vote and elect into office members of the colonial assembly. What requirement did Virginia adopt that changed who had the right to vote, and who did this requirement effect?|||In 1867, Virginia was placed under US military rule. A constitutional convention held in Richmond under the leadership of carpetbaggers and scalawags drafted a constitution that disqualified the overwhelming majority of white Virginians from holding office and deprived about 95% of them of the right to vote. In this crisis, a compromise was negotiated under which white Virginians would accept ***** suffrage if they themselves were permitted to vote and hold office. The amended constitution, providing for universal manhood suffrage, was adopted in 1869, and Virginia was readmitted to the Union on 26 January 1870.

    HOPE I HELPED!!!!

What crop of colonial Virginia became the major export of Virginia to the Old World? Surgarcane is incorrect.|||Tobacco|||Tobacco was introduced to Europe by Sir Walter Raleigh, and was at the time promoted as being healthy and a cure-all for any number of ailments.

Tradition says that, since smoking was unknown outside of the New World at the time (and even there it was used more as a ceremonial thing, an example being the tradition of the peace pipe among some Native American groups), one of Raleigh's servants walked in upon his employer enjoying a pipe, thought Sir Walter was on fire, and promptly doused him with a nearby bucket of water.|||The clue is in the word 'Virginia'|||Tobacco.

What can you do in Virginia?? and not the beach its to cold now :/|||Well, what do you want to do?

Busch Gardens and Kings Dominion are still open. Also, the Virginia State Fair is still open. (Last weekend for it, though.)

There are many parks and museums open. If you are interested in science, the American Civil War, the Revolution, military history, art, clothing, et al. there is a museum for it. Every location has some type of park in it. In Richmond, I love sending people to Maymont Park because of the landscaping and artwork and exotic plants there. (All the niece and nephew want to do there is the petting zoo.) Go visit the homes of Presidents! Monticello (Jefferson), Mount Vernon (Washington), Ash Lawn (Monroe), and Montpelier (Madison). That list is not all inclusive. Visit Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond where Monroe, Tyler, and Davis are buried.

The mountains are a nice destination. We have had a horrible drought this year, so I don't know if the colors will be all that vivid. However, apples are in season. Go to an orchard and pick some apples and then can or cook them. There is this wonderful recipie for pork chops and apples... I gotta go see what my wife is cooking for dinner tonight! Also, a lot of the orchards are organizing events during this time.

It is October, and that means that a lot of the Halloween events are starting up. We used to hit something up every weekend for the longest time.

    I hope that this helped.

    Good luck!|||Go explore the mountains!

Which of these cities is the best to move to?
    Virginia Beach
    Norfolk
Richmond|||Virginia Beach - the others are not even in the running!|||Yeah, if you live in Virgnia Beach, you basically live in Norfolk bc theyre right beside eachother. Va Beach is safer so stay there and drive to Norfolk when u need something.

    |||Chesapeake would be the best place to move to in Hampton Roads. Avoid Richmond. Norfolk is about 10% good neighborhoods and 90% bad. Virginia Beach is too spread out, takes forever to get anywhere.

    |||I lived on the Peninsula for about 9 months....hated every minute of it.....only drove through Richmond getting the heck outta Virginia....but Virginia Beach was nice!!!|||Richmond the City Shopping :)|||i live near VA Beach. The beach is really nice and there's beautiful waves, but there are a little more crimes there.

in Norfolk, it's nice and there's a lot of businesses there. then environment is o.k

richmond is far away from VA Beach and norfolk but it is very close to washington d.c where you can eat and shop for a lot of things

i personally prefer the peninsula which is near Virginia Beach and Norfolk|||Richmond, I lived in that area for a long time and went to college in Richmond, it's a great city. Plus the location is great! Two hours to the beach, two hours to DC, two hours to the mountains. I now live on the Peninsula (between Richmond and VA Beach) which is okay but I liked Richmond better. VA Beach is the most populated of the three.
