virginia: I live in Fairfax, VA where it is illegal for pet stores to sell turtles. I was wondering of any turtle breeders or pet stores in the Northern Virginia area where I would be able to buy one.|||If it's illegal for pet stores to sell them, it's highly likely that it's illegal for you to own one anywhere in the state. Unfortunately, there are still a number of states that have a complete ban on turtles. I'm in Tennessee and there is a ban on them here as well. The only way to get around it is if you're a legitimate institution buying turtles for educational or research purposes, in which case you would need to obtain a possession permit from your state's wildlife resources agency. However, I've read that a bill was introduced last year to get the FDA to lift the ban on pet turtles.
