I currently hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. I am considering obtaining my initial teaching license with PK-6 endorsements. Ultimately, my goal would be to become a school principal one day. What is the best path to reach this goal? Please tailor your answer to requirements in Virginia. Thanks in advance!|||Most of the teachers that I've worked with that have gone on to become administrators follow this path.
They teach in their subject area for at least 3 years, mostly while they're working on their administrative degree.
Once they have obtained that, they usually apply to be an assistant principal over the summer during summer school to get their bearings.
If that works out, they then go on to get a position as an assistant principal, usually at another school.
After many years of work and dedication as an assistant principal, they generally move up to API positions or APO positions, and then from there may transition up to becoming principal of a school.
This more often than not requires transfers between schools, and sometimes districts.
